Well I have gotten my PH down to about 7.2 / 7.4

Took 2-3 days and a gallon of acid...

Now that I have the ph this low.. Is it ok to keep adding the muriatic acid when needed.. Or should I switch to a pH decreaser...

Muriatic acid IS ph decreaser. The other stuff (dry acid) is sodium bisulfate and it creates sulfuric acid when dissolved in water. It is not as effective as muriatic acid and costs more. Doesn't really matter which one you use but most of us on the forum use muriatic.
As long as you don't pour either one into the skimmer it won't hurt your cartridge filter.
