Trichlor is also very acidic. Sometimes new pools, especially concrete-type pools, have a rising pH as they cure. So the Trichlor not only adds needed CYA (stabilizer), it counters some of the rising pH by introducing acid.

But you can easily maintain a pool never using trichlor. When it come to pool care, knowledge IS power.
