There is nothing wrong with trichlor if your CYA is not too high. Those tabs are stabilized which means they have CYA in them. Sometimes people get in trouble with using them if they don't monitor their CYA levels. Most people don't realize that needed chlorine levels are based on that stabilizer reading and thus they don't keep enough chlorine in the pool and then get algae and can't figure out why. Trichlor is also very acidic. Sometimes new pools, especially concrete-type pools, have a rising pH as they cure. So the Trichlor not only adds needed CYA (stabilizer), it counters some of the rising pH by introducing acid.

But you can easily maintain a pool never using trichlor. When it come to pool care, knowledge IS power.
