    Question New guy

Hi. I remember visiting this forum several years ago and then it kinda fell off my radar. I was recently pleasantly surprised to see it continue and thrive. Always found a lot of good info here.

As for me, my family and I installed our 24' round 4' deep above ground pool ourselves about 8 years ago. We had never done that before, but with enough patience and perseverance, we got it installed. We originally bought it from Rec Warehouse but they have since left the Charlotte NC area. It came with a 200lb sand filter. Two years ago I had to replace the original pump and motor with a Hayward Power Flo LX pump rated at 1.5 hp 70 gpm. The original motor which had two speeds; the new one is single speed.

This leads to my question: is this motor too powerful for my sand filter? On occasion it seems like material will blow back into the pool while I'm vacuuming. I never had that happen with the old pump.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Yes. It is too powerful for your pool. You are seeing the consequences of it being too big in the debris that is being forced through the sand bed without actually being filtered out.

I am not the pump expert around here so someone else can you a better opinion than I can. When I had a 24ft AG, I had a full-rated 1/2 hp inground pump and it was plenty big enough. In fact, I am still using that same pump on my 27ft AG even still. It is paired with a 300 lb sand filter.

Sit tight and let one of our pump people give you an opinion.
