    Default CYA Test

I just want to verify that when doing the CYA test that your looking for the black dot to entirely disappear.

I added 3lbs of stablizer to my pool(15k gallons)and my CYA reading is still at 0(or below 30ppm). I had also been using trichlor tabs up until 3 days ago. So far my TC level has remained well above 12ppm and I havent added any bleach for the last 3 days trying to get it down to 3ppm.
    Thanks
    John

Yes, that's correct. Keep in mind that CYA dissolves very slowly so it will take 5-7 days before you get an accurate measurement of your CYA level after you add the CYA.

I know this isn't my thread, but I've got a quick question about the CYA test too...

When I do my testing I generally sit at my kitchen table. I do my CYA test standing at the window (my kitchen window faces East, so I get morning sun). This morning my results standing at the window were 50. Just for kicks I stepped outside on my porch in the direct sunlight to see what I got there. Out on the porch I was able to add more of the testing mixture before the last hint of the dot completely disappeared and got a reading of 40. So, which is the most accurate reading?

I can't recall what the directions in the PS234 kit say but I would guess that you want to do the test in daylight away from direct sunlight. That way you could do the test and get fairly consistent results no matter whether the sun is shining or not (unless it's very overcast of course).

don't get too uptight about getting really really accurate results.

I don't think anyone here will tell you they can advise you to run the pool chemistry much different at 40 ppm or 50 ppm You just need to know that you are near 40 ppm and not 80 or 10.

Give this man a cigar! People get a bit too paranoid at test results. Some need to be very accurate (FC, TC, CC) some are ok within a small range (pH),
some have a much wider range to be 'OK' in (TA, CH, CYA)

Oh, this is all good to know cause I did my CYA inside the house and placed it on top of a white piece of paper... when I had the water tested (pool store four days before)it was 53 and when I did the test a few days later (practice ) it was like 80!!!! I will wait for a sunny day and do it outside.....
    THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION!!!!

Actually, this test is best done outside in the shade with the tube held about waist level.

    Wink Re: CYA Test

I do the test outside, standing on one leg and leaning over a brick wall, while chewing gum. And if that dont work I will slap myself in the eyes and while they are still watering do the test.
