pump for well water

I am filling my pool. I have been told by one Person that it would be best to run thewater full blast. Another person recommended to run it about a 1/4 of what would be full blast. Just would like more advice of which would be best on my pump. Thanks, Sharon

I'm not a big fan of running a well pump for an extended period of time...but I don't see how either one would be better or worse for the pump...so I vote for full blast...whats your flow rate?

I spoke with a friend of mine who installs pumps and drills wells. He said it is best on the pump to let it run for long periods of time vs. having it cycle on and off too much.

His other suggestion was to put a fan behind the pump to blow the heat away in order to keep it cooler.

When I filled my pool I let it run for periods of about 4-6 hours overnight. I used two hoses each from a different faucet and this kept the pump running continiously.

I do not know the flow rate. I know it is 1 1/2 hp and we have a shallow well.

We just filled our 18x33 from a shallow well at only 7' down. The one thing you may want to consider is will you be running it dry or close to the bottom if it runs too long? We have a flowing stream under ours, BUT the well was created with a vertical culvert (metal so it rusted over the years) and it still ran the water level down further than usual so crud was worked up that had been settled near the bottom at the pea rock level. We would run ours full power for 6-8 hrs at a time, pump house door open. Rust, silt and crud were issues. Multiple filters in a series (2 rust/sediment, then charcoal) as well as use of Iron Myte along with continuous filtering (alternate pump/filter units with hoses over the side) to deal with filtering out the goop the sequestering agent made of the iron content.

i would think full blast pumps do better running longer than starting and shutting down but even have half blast i doubt it will turn off anyways. Don't know where you are at but i have never had a problem using well water for anthing. i use it in my saltwater fish tank with no problems for years, but they to sell and deliver water from a well near where i live.

It is best to run a well pump continuously. Every time it starts there is a torque applied that puts some stress on the pipe and the motor. Only problems are as stated above by running the well dry or stirring up a bunch of silt. When I filled mine in the Fall 97 I had 3 garden hoses, pressure was a mere 20 psi, pump never shut off but the pool was filled with muddy water. That settled out over the Winter and was no problem.
