Default Newbie confused about start up plan.........

Good morning......I started filling my pool yesterday afternoon.

I did not fill it during the night; but plan to resume when I get off work this evening. I have added the chorine as stated in the plan. I'm thinking I will be finished filling this evening. My questions are:

    1. Since I have the dichlor should I add it while I go to work today (it will be rainy and cloudy all day)even though the pool is not full?

    2. Does the start up plan end once the pool is full? The 7-days confused me...........

    3. Do I add dichlor tonight once the pool is full or the four doses of bleach?

    4. Do I just empty the dichlor bag in the pool or mix it in a bucket first?

    5. How should I add the borax?

    6. When should I turn the pump on? There are already "things" in the pool...........Im thinking I should turn it on once it is full?

    7. Should the pump be on when adding chemicals?

I'm sorry I have so many questions............I have never owned a pool...

I edited your post and numbered the questions to make it easier to answer them.

    1. Since your pump is not yet running, I would probably add some bleach today. Just pour it slowly in front of your hose so it will mix in faster. Be careful not to splash you or your liner (if it is a liner pool).

    2. You will use dichlor until you get your CYA level where you want it. After that, just switch to using bleach. For most pools, a CYA of about 50ppm works well. The connection between CYA and chlorine levels is explained here: http://pool9.net/cl-cya/

    3. The info in the SS Recipe includes using bleach so that people who need a few days to get their dichlor will know how much to add. Since you already have the dichlor, go ahead and begin using it.

    4. Either way is ok. If you decide to put it directly in the pool, broadcast it around instead of dumping it all in one spot. It is quick dissolving but if you notice any piles sitting on floor, just brush it around.

    5. Borax can be added slowly to the skimmer while the pump is running, breaking up any clumps. Don't put it too much too fast.

    6. Turn on the pump when the pool is full.

    7. The pump should always be on when adding chemicals. (But, it will be ok to add a little bleach today before you turn the pump on.)

Don't worry about too many questions. That is why we are here. If you have more, ask away.

Do a lot of reading here on the forum, especially the stickied threads at the top of the various subsections. Also, read over on our sister website www.poolsolutions.com.

Make a signature by using the link in my signature above. Include in it: type of pool and volume, size of pump, size of filter and whether or not you have a Taylor K2006 kit. If you don't, do yourself a favor and get one. http://pool9.net/tk/ (Won't be available locally.)

Thank you!! I don't think my pool has the over the wall skimmer......... So should I add the borax in front of the inlet that pulls the water into the pump? I will definitely update my signature......

I'm not sure if that will work well or not. Maybe pre-dissolve it in a bucket of water and pour it around the pool in various spots.

Or, you can just scatter it in the pool. It won't hurt anyone to be walking around on it.
