converting cover reel

My idea is to have my husband drill a hole through each end and then mount the end of each into some type of wood that will be placed in the ground (the wood poles will be about an inch taller than our pool). So my idea is to have 4 wood poles in the ground,and attach the reel to the poles.

Anyone think that this idea could work?
