    Default Need some advise

Good Afternoon, We inherited our pool late last season when we bought our new home. It is a 25,000 gallon inground vinyl liner pool. We are also new parents, and because of that, neglected to close the pool before the start of the New England fall season - it was finally closed in October, but not before getting pretty full of leaves. We did our best to get everything out with a leaf rake, we knew there was still some left, but had to get it closed before it got worse. We treated the pool & went through normal closing.

As expected, when we opened it a few weeks ago, it was a bit of a mess. Not quite as bad as expected, we did run the filter for a few days before opening which I think helped some. We now have all of our chemicals balanced after shocking the hell out of the thing initially, and are vacuuming daily. However, likely due to the leaves decomposing over the winter, we have some gnarly cloudy, viscous water. As I said the chemicals are balanced (per the strips), but we can't get the water clear. We have not tried any clarifiers, or anything else, wanted to check in here to get opinions before we went out & spent a whole bunch on stuff that may not work. Was thinking maybe Super Floc?

    Welcome to the Pool Forum!

We really can't give good advice without some good testing numbers taken with a drops-based kit. The kit we recommend is the Taylor K2006 or 2006C (better buy). It isn't available locally but you can get it through our Amazon test kit link: http://pool9.net/test/

In the meantime while you are waiting for that great kit to be delivered, see if your Walmart has the 6-Way kit (NOT the 6-Way test strips) or if not, get a cheap OTO/Phenol Red kit (yellow and red drops). Test and post your results and then someone here can try and advise you on clearing it up.

Also, tell us what size your pump is and what type and size of filter you have. You should be running the pump 24/7 while you are trying to clear the pool, cleaning the filter as needed.
