A good dose of what, to do what?

If you are talking about chlorine bleach it depends. If you use 8.25% bleach, 1/4 cup will add about 1ppm (part per million) of free chlorine to your water. That would be "1" on the Chlorine side of your OTO tester. If your water is new, and clean it will BARELY sanitize it--and in sunlight it will melt away like a dropped ice cream cone, maybe in as little as 15 minutes.

If you are talking about 1/4 cup of Di-chlor powder, I cannot tell you how much it will add, but it will add nearly as much stabilizer as chlorine, and you need that to prevent the "melt-away" I mentioned. If you use di-chlor powder, the free chlorine will rise and fall as it combats and sanitizes, but the stabilizer (known as CYA) will continue to rise. At around 30ppm, you should see if the chlorine level is more stable, but there you need to keep the chlorine between 3 and 6.

If you don't have a test kit you need one. We recommend the Taylor K-2006 series which is the best bargain a pool owner can buy. But a less expensive alternative is the WalMart 6-way drop test kit made by HTH.

What you really need to do, is read, read, read! Read everything you can at our sister site, PoolSolutions.com. Read sticky threads here...and ask questions!
