I purchased a house with a pool some years ago, small in-ground pool. It does not have a light. I am guessing your standard, circular underwater light is out of the question, but do they make some sort of low-voltage rope lights or something that can go around the rim of the pool or something like that? The pool is empty right now awaiting a new liner. Just curious, thanks.

Yup, they do. Check on-line with places like Leisureliving dot com and poolproducts dot com. I've seen advertised a pool light that hangs over the side into the water, but can't remember where.
