    Default New User Hello

    I am newly registered but did use a lot of information from this site in setting up my 18x36 Intex pool. Unfortunately due to a series of events I now have green algae in my pool. I have read enough here to hopefully get the cure started.
    These are my stats as I know them:
    OTO = Orange
    CYA = 60
    pH = 7.8

    I did test the alkalinity and hardness before I started "Shock and Aw" and they were within range. I'm not sure of the waters temperature but it is pretty warm. Feels like bath water during the day.

    My algae problem started a couple of weeks ago and I started the higher doses of chlorine (bleach) and my water turned very cloudy. After reading I thought it was the dead algae, but now it is green again. I think I was not aggressive enough the first time around.
    I only have the cheap replacement filter cartridges at the moment (have good ones on order) but I am replacing them every couple of days or as needed.
    I am brushing/vacuuming the pool daily. It is taking longer than I thought for the water to turn clear.

    Let me know what other test results you need and I can get those tomorrow. My husband takes a sample to work where he has access to a machine that tests water quality.

    In the meantime is there anything else I should be doing/monitoring?
    I know this pool is really not too large to drain and refill but that kind feels like defeat and I'm not ready for that just yet.

    Any information would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Dena85

    Intex filter/pump sets (especially the included ones) are woefully undersized for clearing dead algae from a pool.
    Perhaps you could run the pump and bleach-bleach-bleach, brush-brush-brush until the green is gone. Then, shut off the pump and see if the cloud settles to the bottom.
    If the cloud settles, try to vacuum it to waste. If you have an Intex venturi-vac that connects to the hose, you could plug the outlet (in the bag) and set up a siphon in the hose to vacuum to waste.

    The key will be bringing your chlorine to shock level and consistently keeping it there. With a 60CYA you need to keep the chlorine level above 20ppm. You should get a K-2006 test kit so you can know for sure where you are at chemical wise. PoolDoc wrote up a helpful post about how to get the right kit: http://www.poolforum.com/pf2/showthread.php?14994

    If you can test and add chlorine several times a day, that will probably help. Make sure you're running the pump/filter 24x7 while you clean things up. The chlorine kills the algae, and the filter removes the dead algae from your pool.

    Without the K-2006 kit you can't say precisely when you're done killing algae because you don't have a combined chlorine reading. However, you should at least keep shocking until the water has been totally clear for a day or two. Also, I might be misjudging your filter but I'd probably be cleaning it daily rather than every few days while you clean up.

    Thank you for the reply. My water is finally not green anymore. It did take longer than I expected but it's just very cloudy now. I have been brushing everyday and cleaning my filter cartridge and running it 24/7. I am also adding bleach and shock every evening. I am going to keep this up for a couple more days before turning off the pump to see if it will settle to the bottom to be vacuumed. I do have a siphon vacuum so I can remove the dead algae.
    Do you recomend any of the floc or drop out products?
    If I am going to keep this pool I will probably want to upgrade my filter/pump to one more suited. I will look for some threads for more information on that.

    We don't ususally reccomend floc products - sometimes they work and sometimes they make the cloud harder to fix.
