I moved into this house which included the in ground pool 10 years ago. For 9 years I followed the advice of the pool store. This spring I found this website and began following the BB method.
I bought a Taylor K-2006C and threw away my test strips. I tested and adjusted my water 2 - 3 times per week, even if it was cloudy or rainy all week. I know exactly where my CYA levels are (60) and my FC is maintained at around 7 - 9 ppm. I did not re-instal a new Nature 2 filter this year - the chamber is empty.
This is the first year ever that my water has remained sparkling clear at all times! I have not had one flair up of green algae on the walls as I have had every year before (especially in August). I have not had to backwash my DE filter once since after the first week when opening the pool.
For once I feel like I have some control over my water chemistry rather than the other way around. I used to take a sample into the pool store and go home $150 poorer with a box of chemicals and some instructions of what to add when. I haven't added it up, but I know I saved money with a few PH and alkalinity adjustments using Borax and baking soda, CYA adjustments with a bag of CYA purchased online, and FC maintained by 8.25% bleach at $2.99 a gallon.
I just want to thank Poo ldoc and all the other leaders of this site for taking the time to help people enjoy their pools! Thank You!
