    On most in-ground pool filters, it's repairable. If it's a small AG filter, you'll need to check and see if you can order parts. The most common failure is in the "laterals".

    What Ben said. The laterals are strainers that radiate from the middle of the filter at the bottom. Common for them to get brittle and break. Small break will allow sand to enter the filter outlet.
    Parts are cheap, but it's labor intensive (sand removal).
