We are exploring options and my husband bought a sand filter pump but we don't see anything about using chemicals?

You need chlorine to keep any pool sanitized regardless of pump / filter type.
12'x24' oval 7.7K gal AG vinyl pool; ; Hayward S270T sand filter; Hayward EcoStar SP3400VSP pump; hrs; K-2006; PF:16
So where do I start no directions with anything
Some questions for you:
-- What kind of pool do you have and what is the volume?
-- How big is your pump?
-- Do you have a test kit and if so, what kind?
-- Is the pool already filled?
-- What is the source of your fill water?
-- What all have you added to the pool -- meaning ingredients and not just product names or 'shock.'
Read a lot here on the forum, especially the stickied thread at the top of the subforums. Also, read on our sister website www.poolsolutions.com

bring your stabilzer to 30-40, (buy from walmart) use bleach/liquid chlorine to use to chlorinate (bring it up the amount suggested by ben in his best guess chart), bring you PH to 7.4-7.6 range and you'll be good! I use muriatic acid (PH down) borax (PH up)- (or aerate), liquid chlorine (more cost effective in my area then bleach). and stabilizer from walmart - only put that in once a year.
your pool will be shiny clean!
