    Unhappy CYA adjustment

    Hi,

I am trying to follow the instructions for how to clean up a green pool in the post titled - Turning Your Green Swamp Back into a Sparkling Oasis.

I bought the HTH test kit and just did the CYA test. When I shook the water for a little more than 30 seconds it never clouded up at all! Then when I poured it into the black dot viewer the black dot never disappeared. I stupidly poured it all down the drain. I then read a lot more about the CYA test and found out I could have reused that water/solution and did the test a few more times. Anyway, from what I've read I have a CYA reading of zero. I am pretty sure it really is zero because I have never added CYA (conditioner), diclor or trichlor as I have always used Pristine Blue products and hypo chlor shock in the past. This little HTH test only gives you enough chemicals for 2 CYA tests so I hate to blow the second one...

When I enter my information on the pool calculator it shows that to raise my CYA to 30 (as level to try for according to the algae post instructions) I should add 115 oz. (by weight). I'm afraid to do this. Also, the directions say to add it to a sock and put it in my skimmer. 115 oz. sure won't fit in a sock...

This is what information I put in the calculator -

    pool gallons - 28,800 (33' round 4.5" AG pool)
CYA now 0, CYA goal 30

Could it possibly be right that I need to add that much CYA?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

That is about the right amount of CYA to get to 30ppm. Do it a couple of lbs at a time. Another way is to put the sock in front of a return jet. Give the sock a squeeze every now and then to help it dissolve faster. When the sock is empty, add more until you get it all dissolved.
