Re: Shocking a pool?
1) When you have algae.
2) When the CC is consistently measureable.
3) When the pool has experienced a toxic event (poo, vomit).
Here at the Pool Forum, Shock is not a noun but a verb. Shocking a pool is the process of raising the FC above the shock level as specified in Ben's Best Guess Chart and keeping it there until the problem is resolved. If you looked at the chart, you probably noticed that the proper shock level is dependent on knowing the pool's CYA (stabilizer) level. Shocking often requires FC levels in excess of what standard test kits and strips can read. We strongly recommend (insist jumping up and down) that everyone with a pool buy and learn to use a Taylor K-2006 test kit. It contains all the test you'll need to successfully follow the pool care method taught here.
The pool care method taught here (sometimes called BBB) is simple, sanitary, and efficient. It is built on science and proved by time. Read through the stickies in the forums at this site (you'll probably have to log out) and through the guides at poolsolutions.com to get a good overview of our method.
We're here to help you keep your pool clean and safe.
