How many ounces are in those 8.25% bleach jugs?
How many ounces are in those 8.25% bleach jugs?
The jugs of bleach are 121 oz
If you read the Best Guess chart I mentioned before, you'll see that a pool with extremely high CYA like yours needs a shock level of 25ppm. So, you can see that when you stated that you have kept your pool at shock level for the past week, you actualy haven't been going high enough.
Each of those jugs will add approximately 2.5ppm of chlorine to your pool. You can use that as a reference to figure out doses of bleach to add while you are trying to clear up the pool.
Three hours or so after you put that dose of Borax in, retest pH and before you add the large doses of bleach. If your pH is not above 7.0. add more Borax. Get your pH above 7 before you shock the pool because the pH test won't give an accurate reading when you chlorine level is as high as you are going to have to take it.
You are going to need to keep your chlorine level at shock level until the following conditions are met: the pool clears, and until you can go from sundown one evening to within one hour of sunrise the next morning without losing more than 1ppm of chlorine and until your CC reading is no higher than 0.5. Then, keep the chlorine at shock level for one more day for good measure and then let it drift down and keep it between 8-15ppm all the time. If you let it drop lower than that, you'll have another algae bloom to deal with. Also, run the pump 24/7 while you are trying to clear the water.
What have you been using as your source of chlorine, by the way? Also, what kind of filter do you have?
Hope this helps.
Hi Watermom
I have been using dollar store bleach then a week ago switched to Walmart great value bleach I had forgotten the pool co that opened it almost 2 weeks ago put trichlor tabs on the the chlorinator. Thanks for the help with the ph and I have been looking for the best guess chlorine chart. I will post results later this evening & then again in the morning.
I appreciate the help![]()
For CYA to have built up to higher than 100, there has to have been more than 2 weeks worth of trichlor tabs. Is that what has been used in past years? Any dichlor shock powder this year or previous years? Are you sure the CYA test was 100? Did the CYA test cloud up really quickly?
By the way, you are welcome!
I am not sure what kind of shock the guy who opened the pool put in. I was using bleach only last year. The last time I tested it was almost 2 weeks ago & I ran out of cya testing drops. It was 75 the last time I checked. The only way to drop the cya is backwash & refill right?
Any idea what's making it so cloudy?
Yes, the only way to lower CYA is to do a partial drain and refill.
My guess for the cloudiness is that you are on the verge of an algae bloom from not having enough chlorine in the pool for your CYA level.
Don't use any forms of chlorine other than bleach.
I have been keeping my chlorine at shock levels to clear out algae. Texting from a Taylor k2006 reading as follows
FC 24
Cc .4
Ph unsure
Alk 50
Cya 60
The algae is starting to clear up however it's cloudy. Since the CL was so high I couldn't accurately test the ph so I mixed half tap half pool water and the ph read 7.4
Can anyone advise me on how to accurately test? And what to do to to rid of the cloudy water?
Appreciate the help in advance
Anastasia
