Is this Correct ?

First post here after reading as much as I could. I just need some verification on my understandngs. Making the switch to the BBB method. I continue using my Trichlor tabs in my Hayward feeder(or floater), this is my stablizing agent(cya), I raise the PH level with 20 Mule Team Borax, I shock with regular bleach, this is my sanitizing agent. Is this correct? My main question is, is there a problem putting trichlor and bleach in the poor( seperately of course). I know they are both forms of chlorine but have read posts of persons who use bleach only. I normally just use the bag of shock from the pool store.

I believe to do the bbb method you would stop using the tablets once you ran out. THen you just use bleach for sanitizing and shock. When your stabalizer runs low then you need to purchase it and add to the pool.

Not really knowing much and being a newbie here my main concern was being able to use the trichlor and shock with bleach. No problems with this? When I asked the pool store guy this he pushed me towards the bags of non stablized shock.

Stabilizer levels will NOT go down unless you remove water and replace it or unless the CYA is biodegraded by anerobic bacteria in a closed pool.

The BBB method is just using sodiium hypochlorite(non stabilized chlorine) for both sanitizer and shock, adding the proper amount of stabilzier to stabilizer the chlorine. and balancing your water with the usual chemicals (but purchased from possibly unusual sources at a lower price) with the exception of using borax for raising pH since it has minimal effect on TA while soda ash RAISES TA while it raises pH. Nothing new or radical about it at all....just good pool chemistry with minimal problems. As far as borax goes...it is the new 'wonder chemical' in some pool stores under names like Proteam Supreme and Biolab Optimizer where it is being used for algae prevention and pH control and stability.

The bags of shock are Calcium hypochlorite. It is fine to use but more expensive than bleach. Remember, the pool store won't make any money from you if you buy your bleach at walmart instead of buying cal hypo or liquid chorine (same chemical as bleach) from them!

Im interested in this as well so just to clarify(for my peace of mind) it is fine to use trichlor in a feeder then add bleach to the pool when necessary, correct? Would you turn the feeder off during the bleach adding process.

if you have an inline feeder just don't add the bleach to the skimmer. pour it into the pool right in the stream of the return so the water starts to ciruclate it and dilute it then brush your pool to help mix it. Trichlor doesn't play well with other forms of chlorine and can react violently with them if mixed in concentrated forms. Once in the water it really doesn't matter. If you use a floater for the trichlor just take it out when you add the bleach and put it back in after you brush. Same applies to Cal Hypo ( the bags of unstabilzied chorine shock). Dissovle cal hypo in water and then put it into the pool. Be sure to brush very well after as it is very slow to dissolve and can bleach a vinyl liner if it falls on it undissolved.
