please help with water balance

We used Baquacil for 3 years and are tired of wasting tons of money and having problems all the time. When we opened our pool the other day we decided to just drain most of the water and refill hoping to make the switch faster. We did this and put in the shock, chlorine and algicide that the pool place in town told us to use. Our readings are still not right. Can someone please tell me what to do to get our pool balanced. We have a 28 foot round above ground vinyl pool.

Here are our readings from the pool store.

Total Alkalinity 170

Ph Level 7.7

Calcium Hardness 232

Add enough plain, unscented bleach to raise your chlorine level to 12-15 ppm. If you'll search through the forum for a post made by mwsmith2, there's a bleach calculator attached in his sig that will help you figure out how much to add, based on your pool gallonage. You will need to continue to add the bleach, testing 2-3 times daily, and each time adding enough to come back up to the 12-15 ppm range. In the meantime, go to the Baquacil forum and read through the posts there. There are several people on this forum who have gone through successful conversions and are VERY happy with the results.

Edit: I just re-read your post and realize that you are not still in the conversion process. HOwever, with your CYA that low, you still need to shock your pool up to the 10-12 ppm range to burn off the combined chlorine that you have. Sorry about the misunderstanding!

Your dimensions indicate a roughly 18,500 gallons pool.

Your analysis says you need more bleach, and more CYA.

You need at least 5 gallons of bleach to bring the Cl up to 5 ppm

The CYA reading of 8 from the pool store needs to be increased to at least 40 - 50 ppm. About 7 lbs is needed, but I would add no more than 2 lbs. at a time, and check your figures again.

BTW, the reading of 8 ppm from the pool store could only be achieved by Superman. Get yourself a good test kit, either a Taylor 2006, or even better order Ben's kit. Go to poolsolutions.com for that and scroll down to order the PS234. The test kit is slow in being delivered because of demand.
