Default Filling and when to start adding bleach

My pool is filling and it appears it will take quite some time (days) so when do I start adding bleach - the skimmer and return are not even installed yet and probably won't be until water level reaches 1/3 - 1/2. I don't want that water just brewing in there as it fills if thats what will happen - we are expected to be in the mid 80s to low 90s the next couple days, some miscellaneous insects (June Bug invasion) and debris have fallen in as filling - I have dipped out but I'm sure they left residue. We are only at about 4" water now.

I'd get some bleach in it. The Sun will burn it off rapidly in the day, so I'd put it in at dusk.

Slosh it around as you put it in to prevent it from really concentrating and then it will disperse naturally. I little submersible pump, if you have it, may be of some assistance. It will be gone soon after the Sun hits it so you'll need to add it each evening to be really effective. Use the bleachcalc to tell you how much.

Soon, you'll be able to get some CYA in there but I don't think I'd try it 'til you get at least a foot or more of water.

With new water, I like to start with Di-chlor rather than bleach because it adds some CYA. Bleach is FINE and ALWAYS the best way to chlorinate, but you DO need CYA, as Dave S. says. Tri-Chlor pucks in a floater is also very good at this point because they add CYA and give a constant flow of chlorine. It's just very hard to buy small amounts of Di-chlor or pucks--then you are tempted to use them up, overstabilizing your water, when you should have switched to bleach.

Well we were at about 2' of water last night and installed the skimmer and return. I did add some pucks in the floater yesterday AND we rigged up a small sand filter from a different pool and ran the hoses over the side to start filtering water. We were not diligent in watching for our triple filtering system late yesterday afternoon and they were expended, rust began to get through so the water got a brown tint. My hubby put some Iron Myte for Pools (Metal Out) in there - with the filtering, we have started to see that clear up already.

Thanks for the help on this. Its actually staring to be more like a pool and less like a workout each day!
