It is another way of saying 31% by weight muriatic acid (The standard concentration you get at a pool store). Baume is a measure of specific gravity, or density, of a liquid. The higher the density over plain water, the more more concentrated the acid. As long as we are giving alternate names for things did you know that muriatic acid is commenly called hydrochloric acid (HCl) in scientific circles and muriatic acid is considered an archaic name?

    Waterbear,

    thanks for the answer.

I knew that Muratic Acid is HCl - it's listed as the active ingredient.

btw, I think I remember seeing some Muratic acid with a different percentage, like 36% , maybe. Not sure though.

    thnx

You cannot get more than 31% Baumé, so you will have to find out where you saw that and its standard.

    Pat.
Baume is not expressed in percents. 31% by weight is the same as 20 degrees Baume. What is labeled Muriatic acid is usually 31% by weight or 20 degrees Baume. If the acid is at a different concentration it is usually labeled hydrochloric acid, not muriatic. Anything over 25% by weight is considered to be a corrsosive chemical and 33% to 40% by weight is considered to be concentrated HCl. The percentage refers to the amount by weight of hydrogen cloride gas dissoved in water. Hydrgen chloride gas is the fume that chokes you when you open the bottle.
