Default Bleach with a new liner....What to do not to make wife mad

Well, the wife and I sprung for a new liner and they installed this, along with steps in our 18'x36' 30k gallon IG pool yesterday. They will be back tomorrow to finish running the new lines to the filter (I relocated the filter).

The liner is very dark blue and looks great. I have used bleach the past couple of years and loved the results, though the wife noticed around the permieter of the liner it appears the liner was bleached.

When I added the bleach, I added it at a slow rate in front of each of the 2 returns to help push and mix it. I have a feeling what may have bleached the liner was the HTH Sock It we had used a few times. Again, we sprinkled this along the perimeter but did not mix with water in a bucket.

To play it safe (and prevent any future arguements with the Mrs.) I was planning on adding all my bleach directly through the skimmer.

Does anyone see any issues with this? Any concern of damaging my Hayward EC-65 filter? I was hoping by the time the bleach is expelled through the 2 returns it should be mixed with pool water and not settle to the bottom and do damage.

You can put the bleach into the skimmer as long as your pump is runnng, and unless you have a trichlor inline feeder. However, I'd pour it pretty slowly to keep some of it from going out though the weir door and bleaching right around the skimmer opening.

I also add through the skimmer. I would suggest aiming your return jets downward somewhat when ading bleach instead of upward so the bleach will better mix in with the volume of water rather than have a high concentration right at the water line.

    Hi, Tim,

I have used bleach the past couple of years and loved the results, though the wife noticed around the permieter of the liner it appears the liner was bleached.
That word "perimeter" got me thinking a little. Is the fading above or below the waterline? If it's at or above the water, I would suspect you've got UV degradation (fading from the Sun) rather than bleach.

I've never seen a bleach faded liner, so I'm pretty much guessing but it seems bleach would fade at least as much underwater. If it's exactly at the waterline, perhaps that could be a combination of the two factors. It also seems that bleach damage would be spotty or blotched (from the temporary high concentration) and not very uniform in appearance

Lastly, I would say that dark blue is somewhat problematic for fading. Typically, darker colors are the most susceptible to color change over time.

I have never added bleach any other way then directly into the skimmer.

Thanks everyone. The lightening of the liner was around the perimeter at the very bottom of the pool.

Good idea about the jets, I will do that.

    Thanks again all!

Perimeter at the bottom sounds more like you dumped powdered shock into the pool that was not fully disolved and the granulars sat at the bottom along the edges.
