I would, just to see what's in there. And how big/deep it is. Could be an abandoned rodent den, could be pirate's treasure, could be where someone had buried a pet. Probably ought to be filled in before you locate a pool near it.
Hey -
I started to level my pool, and have this one spot that is "spongy". I step on it, it sinks, then I move and it comes back up. I thought there was a monter in there so I put a 12" nail and nothing came out If I can shove a nail in the ground with my hand that can't be good.
The spot is 1x1ft.
Should I dig it up? It would be near one of the corners in my 15x30 oval pool.
Thanks,
Brad

Remember to compact the soil you use to fill the hole or you might as well build the pool on the spongy spot.
Well I dug it up, and turns out there used to be an old tree stump a couple of feet down. It was the spongy culprit. I dug it out, put a few shovel fulls of dirt in at a time compacted, put a few more, compacted, and so on until it was full.
Glad it wasn't a pet grave.
