New Pool

Hello to all and thanks in advanced for your help. Me and my family are finaly getting our new pool installed next week. A 24' x 15' x 52" AG with a Hayward cartridge filter and vinyl liner. I have a well and will need a truck for the water. The truck is 6,000 gallons and I will fill the remander from our well. Slowly! OK lots of options from this point on so I want to do it RIGHT!
I have been reading through the forums and I think I am at the right place for help. BBB seams the way to go. Will I need to add stablizer from the start and what levels should I bring the chlorine to? Must I shock first or just start adjusting the levels? Of course my next stop is to order the test kit from the site. I'm I right that without pucks its easier to maintane ph and alkalinity and have lower cya levels? What are my step? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks again in advance. John

Hi, John,

I would consider another truckload of water. You pool will hold about 10,750 and 40% well water (plus refills) may cause you some mineral content issues that you can't resolve. Refills should be fine but well water and pools are a frequent mismatch.

If that's not an option, I would have the well water tested so you'll have an idea what you're in for.

It wouldn't hurt to add stabilizer from the start--follow label directions and add enough to tet to about 20 ppm based on your gallonage, for starters. Remember that it takes a very long time to dissolve, so don't backwash or retest for a week or so. In the meantime, you can go ahead and bring your Cl up to 2-3 ppm, but you're going to have to add it daily to make it hold until your stabilizer levels start coming up.

What impact pucks would have on your pool depends a lot on your fill water. They tend to be very acidic, so if you have a constant problem with pH rising, they can be helpful in keeping it down. They will not affect your alkalinity. However, they do tend to add quite a lot of CYA over time. You can start very low with your CYA levels, then use the pucks until the CYA gets to where you want it, if it doesn't cause problems with your pH.

I wouldn't shock the pool until you know for sure the metal content--if you nave no metals in the original water, then it wouldn't hurt to shock it to 12-15 ppm, then let it drift back down to the 3 range.

If you are filling from a well, I would add a sequestering agent before the chlorine. Add as much or more than it calls for in the directions. If you overdose it won't hurt, but if you don't put enough in and you have metal in your water, you could get staining. Better safe than sorry!

Thanks for the responses... I have not had my well water checked yet but I agree about the minerals in the water. I have a whole house filter that catches lots of sediment. Once the pool is full I will first treat it with something to handle the minerals then bring the rest of my numbers into order.
What a great place to pick up some info. THANKS! I'll post some numbers once its all set up and running.
