    Default How much DE?

    Hi,

    New poolowner here...

My DE filter spec says to load 7.5 lbs of DE.

When I do a backwash, does that mean I should load that amount, or something a bit less? The previous owner of the house said he loaded 5 lbs of DE after each backwash.

    Thanks,

    hikernut

    Hikernut,

I have read the rule of thumb is to add 80% of your suggested amount which would be 6lbs if 7.5lbs is 100%. I think if you add 5lbs after backwash, which is just about 67% of 7.5, you will be fine. You may need to add more, but at least you won't add too much too clog things up.

Make sure you know exactly how much DE you are adding. I only use a scooper specifically made for DE so I know the measurement is correct.

My pool guy said 2 lbs after a backwash so you don't overload the grids and 4.5 when you install the filter which is the manufacturer recommended amount for a de-3620
But 2lbs isn't 80% ..So I put 3 lbs just to be in between
I hate getting different instructions from different people!!
