    Default HELP -- LOUD Pump

Have Hayward Power Flo 1 hp. Approx 5 years old.

Was working fine 2 days ago, had a return pipe to bust so I replaced pipe. I believe the receptacle for the pump may have been a "little" wet when I plugged it back in, and pump hummed but did not run. So unplugged it, plugged it back in, it hummed again and it tripped the GFI circuit.

I thought I had blown the pump at this point, so we ran a heavy duty drop cord to it, plugged in up and the pump came back on but LOUD, almost at a deafaning pitch. Not really a vibration, or anything just loud. Unplugged it.

Waited a little while, reset the GFI and plugged the thing back into its normal receptacle, and it still works, but still just as LOUD.

There is no way I can run this pump with it being as loud as it is, my neighbors would call the law. Any ideas what would make a perfectly functioning pump all of a sudden do this?

I tried backwashing, rinsing, checking all baskets, etc.

Any other suggestions? Thanks so much.

It is possible that there is something jammed into the impeller that is causing the noise. Most likely, though, the noise is caused by bad motor bearings. You can replace the motor only, but for this pump a better option is to go ahead and replace the whole thing. Having the bearings replaced is not a cost-effective option.

    Ok -- I gave up.

Went to the pool store fully intending to get ONLY a new motor -- but then they reccommended replacing seals, and the impellar also. All of this combined was 189.00, well I could but the whole new combo for 219.00, and save myself a lot of work, so they suckered me into it.

I have a Hayward 166t sand filter, I have always thought that a 1hp pump was too much for this small filter, so I downgraded to a 3/4.

So I am the proud new mom of a Hayward 3/4 hp pump!!
