I have used them both, and don't find any difference between the two, except the 380 housing is alll one piece, which makes it harder to take apart if you have to replace the belts.

A couple months ago when researching a replacement for my Hayward Viper, I found the 280 had more consistent positive reviews than the 380 (not sure why), so I went with the 280 and have been very pleased with it so far. Going with the 280 also saved me about $200 over the 380 at the time. I just checked Amazon, and prices for the 280 and 380 have fallen quite a bit since I bought a couple months ago.

The 380 might have a little better suction since it uses 3 jets instead of 2, but I've not seen any direct comparison that confirms this.

I've been very happy with my 380. Always remove it from the pool when you shock!

It is time for a replacement and I am thinking of getting the 3900 Sport instead?
