Has any one done this? Seems like a good idea. The installer we will be using does it all of the time. The 3 pools I looked at that he has done had them and the owner loved them!

A low suction port is a good idea in any pool. For an A/G pool, you'd want it secured in concrete, with the crete being a couple inches below the liner. (actually all MDs should be set in crete to keep them from moving around and ripping the liner)
If your pool dude has successfully installed main drains in his previous pools, he probably knows what he's doing.
