Default Bucket test for metals question

I'm thinking I need to test since I'm having some slight staining, son threw a battery in pool AND my SWCG has the copper boost which my husband insists on using occasionally although I've told him a million times to NOT use.

I'm in the midst of fighting an algae bloom right now.

QUESTION: Do I need to get my pool balanced BEFORE I do the bucket test or can I proceed as is? I'm thinking I need to get it cleared up and balanced first.
