Default Blackish/Brown Sludge on Ring - Intex Easy Set

Hi all. I have had my Intex Easy Set pool (18') for five years now. Over the years, a deposit of blackish brown sludge has developed on the inflated ring. I've tried scrubbing it off, but it is like putty. I read online that SoftScrub works, but I don't know if it's safe on vinyl and would hate to find out the hard way. Any suggestions for removing the sludge? Thanks!

Try a paste of baking soda/water, on a scrub sponge...

In most cases this dark deposit at the water line is caused by sun tan lotions, body oils, hair conditioner and so on. To help prevent it you can put a "scumbug" or "scumball", a special oil absorbing sponge, in your skimmer. I've found them at my local pool store. They are inexpensive and last for a few seasons. Just rinse them out in the sink when they get dirty. I've had considerable success in gently rubbing the scum line with a Magic Eraser. You do not want to use Soft Scrub or any soap products.
