Cheap algaecides will do that.....I would shock the pool and let the filter do the rest...

Good! That is one of the main reasons we advise only using Polyquat 60% when you need to add algaecide. Foaming is a common side effect of other ones as you unfortunately learned the hard way! Glad it is getting better.
