Default DE question for sand filter

I'm trying to add DE to my sand filter to help catch smaller particles. What kind do I need? I bought DE filter powder from Home Depot, but its white and completely disintegrated when I added it to the skimmer. I thought it was supposed to be black and form a layer on top of the sand. What kind do y'all use?

Yes, You have the right stuff. I have used this method as well. You don't need very much DE, probably 1-2 cups. Watch your pressure gauge really close, you do not want to have too much pressure build up. If your pressure reaches too high, you could damage your filter.
