You can, and most of do, use the BBB method--it doesn't really have anything to do with salt water. It really means understanding what each chem does to your water chemistry, and knowing that you can get most of what you need from the grocery store, rather than being at the mercy of the profit-driven pool stores who have their bottom line to consider.
Borax can be used in any pool. It is typically used to raise pH, and in other applications it , combined with enough acid to keep the pH in range, can be used to raise the Borate level in your pool, which adds a level of protection against algae. In addition, some people report that the water with high Borate levels sparkles more, and "feels" better.
