    Default is dead algae white

    is dead algae white. I have a lot of white stuff still coming out of my backwash. several weeks ago I noticed the pool a little green so I then took action. but during this whole spring did not know about cya and chlorine levels and was keeping my chlorine level below 3ppm. my cya is 95-100. can you have algae growing and it not show up really in the pool or does it always look green or yellowish.

    You could possibly have water mold, which looks like stings of toilet paper in the water. Dead algae can make a pool look cloudy. If you have a cya of 95 to 100 your chlorined levels are not high enough to have your water sanitized. Here is "Ben's best guess chart":

    Stabilizer . . . . . . Min. FC . . . . Max FC . . . 'Shock' FC
    => 0 ppm . . . . . . . 1 ppm . . . . . 3 ppm . . . . 10 ppm
    => 10 - 20 ppm . . . . 2 ppm . . . . . 5 ppm . . . . 12 ppm
    => 30 - 50 ppm . . . . 3 ppm . . . . . 6 ppm . . . . 15 ppm
    => 60 - 90 ppm . . . . 5 ppm . . . . . 10 ppm . . .. 20 ppm
    => 100 - 200 ppm . . . 8 ppm . . . . . 15 ppm . . .. 25 ppm

    You can see that you have to have a minimum of 8, and a shock level between 20 & 25.

    Algae doesn't always look green or yellow. Your pool could just look cloudy. It will turn green when the bloom is in it's complete glory! Hope this helps, sometimes to see the chart shows how your chlorine demand goes up with cya.
