Cool Pool retailer FAQ on Salt Water Vs. Chlorine....

.... just for fun. Amazing how rampant this is, as it isn't a heck of a lot different from a article in out main local newspaper.

This one is particularly bad and misleading.

    Salt Water Vs. Chlorine

Why use electronic chlorination over traditional chlorine?

Traditional chlorine ties up with wastes in the water creating what are called chloramines. Electronic chlorinators continuously oxidize the chloramines and create "Free Chlorine". Chloramines are what cause common side affects associated with chlorine such as irritation to eyes and skin, bleaching of bathing suits, and that awful chlorine smell. Furthermore you will no longer have to buy, mix or store chlorine, which saves time, money and keeps you from direct contact with a potentially harmful chemical.

Default Re: Pool retailer FAQ on Salt Water Vs. Chlorine....

As with much of what is out there, it's a mix of some truth and some falsehood. Traditional chlorine (i.e. from chemicals) will oxidize the inorganic chloramines that it forms so they are not permanent. Some organic chloramines are slower to oxidize, but the UV in sunlight breaks down chlorine into powerful hydroxyl radicals that help oxidize the organic chloramines. So normally there isn't any problem in an outdoor residential pool with regard to chloramines. It is true that a saltwater chlorine generator superchlorinates a portion of the water with high chlorine levels at low pH so that will tend to oxidize additional chemicals, but this isn't much of a benefit in outdoor pools though can be helpful in indoor pools with no sunlight exposure.
