    Default Installing new filter

    HI all,
My sand filter needs to be replaced. Long story which I won't get into, but there is a long crack in the side of the tank and it is 10 years old, so probably time to replace. I am planning on buying the same type (Pentair TritonII TR 60 for a 20 x 40 liner 33,000 gallon pool). My question is....can anyone post some basic instructions on how to install? Is it too big of a job for my husband? (he is very handy) I know he will need to read the manual for specifics, but just wondering if this is something best left to calling a company to come and install.

Am also wondering if there are special tools needed that only a pool construction/repair person might have and not the average Joe?

From the manual, it looks like the filter comes with unions for connecting the piping which should make the installation straightforward. There are a couple options for the piping connections, 1.5", 2" threaded 1.5"/2" slip. Figure out what you have so you can order the right adapter. Teflon tape is your friend. If existing connections are too tight, a strap wrench can help alot but use caution if using it to tighten as hand tight is plus a little is enough, plastic fittings can break if overtightened.

I very much doubt it--my husband and a friend installed our last one, and neither of them is especially handy, and wouldn't have had any specialty tools...

Husband got the old filter disassembled and we ordered a new one. Found one for $423, local store in town wanted $700. This may seem like a dumb question, but while waiting for it to arrive, can I vacuum to waste? I have had valve on recirculate and been adding bleach to keep chlorine levels where I want them, but pool bottom is getting dirty.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I don't see why not. On waste, it bypasses the filter anyways. Having said that, I also will say --- don't worry about a dirty pool floor right now. You can clean it up quickly once you are ready to get operational again.
