Meet Uh-oh, a pileated woodpecker we rescued in 2008 after the dead pine it's parents had nested in collapsed in a March wind storm. It's nest mate was killed in the collapse, and was eaten by a raccoon or opossum (I'm not that good at tracks) the evening after we got Uh-oh.

He was flying at this point, better than he was eating, so we were keeping him inside a screened picnic tent during the day. At night, he was in my son's bedroom.




I am Scoutmaster of a Boy Scout troop composed mostly of Burundian refugees, who came to the US with their families between 2006 and 2009. My son (in sun glasses) have learned far more from the experience than they have.
