Default pool opening - spare pump used for vac to waste

I have an old Jandy Stealth 2hp In-Ground pump that I was hoping to use as a vac to waste pump for opening my 18K IG Plaster pool this spring. (will also be used to open a neighbors pool)

I prefer the vac to waste process when opening since the bottom is mostly worms and it really smells bad. Dont need this stuff going thru the filter.

I have been using a 1.5hp above ground pump and have problems with priming and keeping suction so I thought I would try the 2hp in-ground pump. I need to get some fittings to reduce the inlet/outlets to accept my vacuum hose and discharge hose

My questions are... Will this set up work ? Is 2hp too strong ?

    Thanks for the feedback

I see a couple possible issues with using a 2HP pump to vacuum.

The first is that you'll have way too much suction for a 1.5" vac hose. However, plumbing in a valved second suction port (before where you attach the vac hose) ought alleviate that issue.

The other problem is powering the 2 HP pump. Whenever I've tried to run a 2HP off a 110 power source, the motor kept kicking the breaker. The electric gurus know better than I, but I think you'd need to keep the cord short and have the wires be heavier gauge.

One last thing - as you rig up the pump, use a union and female adapters so you can be able to adapt it to other uses in the future.

    thanks Ted

After looking into what I would need to plumb this for use with a 1.5 vac hose and the pure size of this pump, I think I pass on this idea.

Switching focus on why I am having problems with the above ground pump that I have been using. It's 1.5 hp and I have trouble priming it. Sitting directly on the pool deck, vac hose directly connected it still can't prime...

Am I fighting a loosing battle using an above ground pump ?

While I'm sure I'm b*st*rdizing the proper terminology - the short story is that AG pumps are meant to be pressure fed, they 'won't' draw water up out of the pool. If you can place it below the water level of the pool, it should work.

Also, Have you fully primed the vac hose (i.e.. filled it with water)? These pumps don't allow for ~ any air in the lines, so it may be possible to use it if you can fully prime the hose and strainer basket.
