    Default Bleach vs Chlorine price

    + 6% bleach is about 0.5lb / gallon, so . . . . 2.98 / (1.42 x 0.5) or ~$4.20/lb Cl2 equivalent

I saw in another recent post and of course people mention in passing all the time that they get bleach cheaper than liquid chlorine or whatever from the pool store. I thought I had calculated them down to a comparable level and found that not to be the case in my area.. am I making a mistake?

    How I calculated it:
    Chlorox 6% bleach = $1.98/96oz at publix
LC 10.5% chlorine = $4.50/320oz at local poolstore

So I figured I'd calculate how much I'd pay in each case per ounce at 1%
watered down to 1% it would be
    96oz*6=576oz of 1%
    320oz*10.5=3360oz of 1%

    $1.98/576oz or $0.44/Gallon or $.003/oz
    $4.50/3360oz or $0.17/Gallon or $.001/oz

There's definitely some lost accuracy due to rounding between price/oz and price/gal, but I think it's roughly good

Did I totally screw this up and have been overpaying? If I have, at least I can console myself with the fact that I only buy a few jugs a year for shocking and cleaning things up out back.

Clorox isn't usually the cheapest bleach. Off-brand Ultra bleaches from Wal-Mart and elsewhere are usually priced at around $1.20 or sometimes less ($1) on sale for a 96-ounce (3/4 gallon) jug. $4.50 for 320 ounces (2-1/2 gallons) is a great price for 10.5% chlorinating liquid and would be the same as $0.79 for 96-ounce 6% bleach (using 6.17% which is it's "trade %" that is the unit used for chlorinating liquid). My 12.5% chlorinating liquid at my local pool store costs me $3.50 per gallon so is roughly equivalent to $1.30 for 6% bleach.

You've found an outstanding source for chlorinating liquid so be sure to thank your pool store for offering the product at a very reasonable price.

Yeah--for offering it at all!! You can't buy liquid chlorine in Louisiana, so that's not even an option for me unless I buy it in bleach form!
