Default Sand filter: side or top mount?

I am looking to replace an old side mount sand filter, but wondering if it might be worth re-configuring a new one as a top mount. Any important difference between the two?

A top-mount sand filter is less expensive to purchase and generally it's easier to work on (replacing sand, latterals, etc.) as compared to a side-mount filter.
