Chlorine- CYA vs non-CYA ?

Greetings--

I use granular non-stablized cholrine added by hand on a routine basis. WHen we go out of town, I add stablized tabs to a Hayward offline feeder. I've noticed that the CYA levels are climbing. End of season last year the level was around 90+ .

Q??-- Does someone make non-stablized tabs ?

Q??-- I realize that a high CYA level causes a loss of sanatizing power from the chlorine. Any other problems caused by high CYA levels (> 100) ?

First, welcome to the forum.
There are more knowledgeable people here then I, but I'll start.

1) Yes, they do make non-stabilized sticks......they are called HTH duration.....
they are very expensive and have less chlorine in them then tri-clor tabs. The best non stabilized chlorine you can use is just plain old bleach.

2) If you have a cya level more then 100, you must have a FC level at least 8ppm to keep your pool safe. The higher your cya, the more chlorine is held in reserve and the less you have doing the job it needs to.

You must go out of town a great deal to have a cya level that high.

The only non-stabilized powdered or stick chlorine is Cal-hypo, which adds calcium to your water. A little is OK, too much is a problem. Stick Cal-hypo can either be wrapped in plastic and 68% chlorine (good) or unwrapped and 48% chlorine (garbage, and dissolves in less than 12 hours).

If your CYA is greater than 100, you need to maintain chlorine levels of 8 to 15ppm normally, and, when you need to shock, push it to 25ppm.
