    Default Del ozone Eclipse 2

    Hi there

First question - How are the DEL ozonator systems considered? Good rep? Bad?

GOt a Bromine indoor pool and want to reduce the chm useage.

    Thanks

    Donnie

When companies say things like this:
"looking for a natural way to sanitize your pool water?"
    or this
"Our non chemical ozone generators for in ground pools and our above ground pool water systems offer technologically advanced pool water sanitation with less chlorine and leaves behind no harmful byproducts" (http://www.delozonepool.com/ -- archived 22Sep2011)
steam starts coming out of my ears.

The problem is not with ozone -- like any other chemical, it has its place, though that is only rarely in a pool. The problem is with a company using 'eco-speak' to deceive gullible journalists and chemically uninformed consumers.

    OK, here we go:

+ Ozone is about as natural as chlorine, arsenic or hydrogen cyanide -- all of which occur in biological or non-man-made geological processes.

+ Compared to chlorine gas, ozone is MUCH more toxic. Here's a quote from "Ozone is one of the most toxic and ubiquitous air pollutants." [ J Toxicol Environ Health. 1984;13(2-3):183-204. ] At least in the UK (I found that first, and quit looking for a US spec) the maximum 15 minute work exposure to chlorine is 1.5mg/m3. By contrast, the limit for ozone is 0.4mg/m3. So, as a gas, ozone is considered more than THREE TIMES as toxic as chlorine gas! [ http://www.hse.gov.uk/coshh/table1.pdf ]

+ Ozone and chlorine destroy each other. The effect of using an ozonator on a BBB method operated pool would be to INCREASE chlorine consumption, in direct proportion to the amount of ozone suppled.

+ Because of the high toxicity, most US ozonators are designed to produce so little ozone that they can't be dangerous . . . or do anything much to your pool!

+ However, most of these ozonators are effective aeration systems, and consequently strip carbonate alkalinity from your pool. On concrete pools, this tends to result in plaster damage. On other pools, it just produces pH instability, if you try to maintain commonly recommended alkalinity levels.

Of course, it's not like Delzone is the bad guy, in constrast with all the other pool chemical company good guys! Here's a simply guideline to follow:
"When pool treatment product companies tell you the benefits of their products -- chemical, mineral, ozone, UV or what not -- they are almost always misleading you, and are often lying, albeit in a way attorneys can defend."
    and another one:
"The chemicals you NEED in your pool aren't profitable enough for pool stores, but almost NEVER need the chemicals that ARE profitable to sell!"
In your case, if you want to cut chemical costs and difficulties, you just need to get rid of the bromine and switch to the BBB method with whichever form of chlorine you prefer. Of course, if you've been using bromine TABS, which contain hydantoin, you'll have to drain 101% of your pool, to switch to chlorine.
