    Smile Can i go from bromine to chlorine ? hair/costumes going green

    Posters please note: this user's pool is in Britain!

    The pool was chlorine and we changed it to bromine last year ,last year my children were getting green hair but not to bad, this year /this season i think my poolman went back to chlorine over the winter and now hes gone back on bromine. could my problem be copper from the heat pump or too much bromine in the system . Can i go back to chlorine and how? thanks Corellia

    Hi Corellia;

    #1 - Chlorine does not cause green hair; copper does.
    #2 - The presence of either chlorine or bromine makes copper more likely to stain, BUT
    #3 - The absence of chlorine or bromine means the pool is unsafe.
    #4 - This Once a bromine pool, always a bromine pool page will explain things you need to know.
    #5 - Neither chlorine nor bromine add copper to your system, or cause copper to erode. But, some chlorine products now have copper mixed in. You'll have to read the label -- it wouldn't do you any good for me to tell you US brands that do this, and I don't know UK brand names.
    #6 - Low pH (less than 7.0) WILL erode pool heaters.

    Also, copper is used in a lot of algaecides so that could also be the source.
