Well, I've personally swum in some ponds as a kid that would make any adults head roll. I've also cavorted in irrigation ditches in Illinois (talk about chemicals!!). I even lived downstream and ate fish from a DuPont Chemical polluted lake in NJ (Pompton Lakes). So, as of this date I do not glow, have a third head, or other ailment.

Swimming in high chlorine levels (say >10ppm), may make your suits bleach, but I don't believe are hazardous. I have high CYA (100ppm) so I tend to occasionally run a higher chlorine, but not all the time.

I've yet to swim in my pool during an algae bloom, just because it looked gross. Not necessarily because I though I was unsafe.

    Hope this helps.
