Default Help! Switching out 1985 cart filter to sand filter

We are very new to the pool world. We bought a house with a in ground 1985 pool and until this week the old cartrige filter worked fine. The o-ring just died and we decided to go with a sand filter. I noticed that some people suggust putting in a bigger filter then is called for. Can anyone suggust a brand and size for our 8000 gal pool? The pool is 12 by 24 (300SF) and is five feet on the deep end and 3 feet on the other end. Thanks in advance.

What is the size / model of your pump?

With a sand filter, you can't oversize the way you can with a cartridge or DE filter, because you need 13 - 15 GPM per sft of sand top surface, in order to backwash effectively.

Looks like a pretty potent pump for an 8000 gallon pool. I can't find a lot of detail, but I did find this, which seems to be the best description. Is yours the 1 speed or 2 speed pump? They are very expensive pumps, priced equivalent to the Hayward SuperPump series.

GENERAL INFORMATION: Speck S90 Series Swimming Pool Pumps The Speck Model S90 series medium head pump has been engineered for durability and quiet performance. All models are equipped with 2" suction and 1.5"/2" discharge, ensuring optimum efficiency. The Model S90 uses 100% recyclable "environment" friendly plastics. Speck's high quality continues in the Model S90 with positive advances to benefit the consumer and the environment. STANDARD FEATURES: This high performance, medium head pump comes complete with our unique mechanical shaft seal that allows the pump, if mistreated, to run dry for up to one hour The pump can be used for pool water with a salt concentration of up to 5000 ppm Pump parts are made of 100% recyclable plastic. Non-corrosive, chemical/UV resistant, and can withstand temperatures of up to 175¡ F All models are equipped with quick disconnect unions for easy installation and maintenance For pool users' safety, the impeller has a dielectric shaft sleeve that provides absolute separation between the pool water and electric parts Heavy duty "1081" pool motor with large 56 frame is thermally protected, has a PSC switchless design and extra large sealed ball bearings Specially constructed clear lid with ring lock design is easy to open. Large strainer basket is always locked in place Available with E-plus¨ /extreme-Eª energy efficient motors for extra low energy consumption.
If it's what I think it is you should be able to use a 200 to 300 lb sand filter with no problem.
