How do I control/handle them in my pool? Can they do serious harm to my filter?

Skimmer socks work well to get stuff small enough to get through the holes in your skimmer basket. As an alternative, you can use an old knee hi hose to stretch across top of skimmer basket. You'd be amazed how much stuff it will trap...

There is a new alternative to sand for a filter that is able to catch and backwash cottonwood. Go to a pool store i forget the name of it but i have it and it works well. its like volcanic ash or something like that.
