I am having the same trouble. It usually takes me (trying to turn the cover) and my dad (using a hammer) to get it off. When I replace the cover it goes on easily. Any suggestions?

you might try a bit of the silicone lube on the cover surface where it contacts the pump rim that holds it in place. Won't hurt to try.
10,000 gallon IG vinyl liner pool, BBB user, salt added to 2300 ppm (because it makes the water feel great!), new liner/new water on 6/23/11, algae-free since 2006 (at least that's as far back as I remember). 1HP Hayward 2-SPEED CONVERTED Superpump, Hayward sand filter, PS234 test kit.
Goal: To remain completely algae-free for the life of this new liner!
Life lesson: It is what it is.

I use the lube, but after it's back on for just a few minutes it's almost impossible to remove again. Once I get it off, it goes back on easily. I even tried closing off the water and letting some of the water out. Nothing seems to work. I busted one using the hammer. Very frustrating.
If you haven't tried this already, try breaking the suction by allowing air into your system, perhaps by opening up your automatic chlorinator, if you have one, or opening up the air valve on your filter. That should make the cover easier to remove.

Happens with mine as well; also hayward. I found that if I "break" the seal while the pump is running, then turn off the pump it comes off much more easily. That's probably risky business, though. The printing on the cover suggests using a piece of wood (2x4 I guess) in between the two ridges to break it loose. It also warns against over tightening. I've found it leaks air in if I tighten it less, though.
