Code in my town is an internal timer, so I have that, in my basement near the breaker panel. But when I had my small pool, I had an outdoor timer that plugged into an outdoor socket and had a simple cover you lifted. It was weatherproof and you could easily adjust it or bypass it. It was ten or 12 feet away from the pool.
Saying it's always going to be in a wet environment concerns me--rain is one thing but you make it sound like it's being sprayed with water constantly and that's not a wise idea.
