Default Bleached out liner - What did i do wrong?

My Vinyl liner was of some undetermined age when we bought the house about 12 years ago (but it appeared pretty new at the time). It began to bleach out around the bottom drain rather quickly, but in general was pretty stable. In the last 2-3 years, it bleached out completely. My chemical regiment has always been the BBB method, using liquid chlorine (the 5-gallon pails from the pool store at 12.5% strength). I pour it either into the pool or the skimmer basket. We never really use that much...3-4 PPM (I use Ben's old test kit).

    My PH hovers around 7.2

When it comes time to invest in a new liner due to age, I don't want to repeat any mistakes I made, or is it just natural for a liner to whiten at that age?

Are you pouring the chlorine in very slowly? All chlorine can bleach out a liner. Always go slow when adding bleach and give it time to mix well. I also think some liners just bleach easier than others. Some people think it is because of using bleach, but bleach is the same stuff as liquid pool store chlorine just not as strong.

Unfortunately, you can't conclude that you did ANYTHING wrong. I checked this out about 15 years ago, and again this spring.

The bottom line is discouraging: some liner patterns and colors are not very chlorine resistant, but there's NO WAY for consumers (or even pool pros) to tell which is which.

As best I can tell, the more expensive Plastimayd liners are resistant. Many others are as well, but since liner manufactures simply assemble (cut, glue, add bead) liners from purchased rolls of sheeting, until the liner mfg start labeling their liners by sheeting source and sheet model, neither you nor I can tell.

The good news is -- bleaching color and pattern is unlikely to damage the liner itself, just its appearance.

Do you use a solar cover? If you have a solar cover and chlorinate with it in place you can bleach the liner. You should also remove the cover for at least a couple hours per day.

I'm not sure this is true. If you shock the pool you would want to uncover the pool at least partially to allow fumes to escape but as far as a solar cover causing a liner to bleach, I'm not sure that is accurate. I add bleach with my solar cover on at times and there are some days that I never remove the cover. When I add bleach (slowly through my skimmer), I always make sure my eyeball is aimed down to send the bleach into the body of the pool water. If my eyeball is aimed up, I think it would cause the bleach to be more concentrated at the top of the water, so I always lower it when adding.

I have been using bleech for the past 6-7 years now and have my solar cover on a majority of the time when doing so without any issues. We have a dark blue liner and have not noticed any fading (yet). I also shock with non-chlorine shock every Sunday night with the solar cover on as well.

I too aim the eyeballs down when the cover is on. When it is off, I aim them up.
